While you’re on your feet shouting “gooooooooooaaaaaaaalllllllll” during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, remember to take a seat at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant in Newark for our Around the World Multi-Tap on Saturday, June 14, from 2–5 p.m.
Iron Hill Newark head brewer Justin Sproul selected beers in a variety of styles to represent the diversity seen throughout the World Cup, a truly international celebration of football teams. Ok, we call it soccer in the U.S., but to the rest of the world, it’s football. And remember, noisy football fans, the vuvuzela is out and the Brazilian caxirola is in for 2014.
“Football, soccer, whatever you call it, these are some of the best athletes to ever play sports,” Justin added. “And this hodgepodge of eight beers is star-studded, too. We had fun choosing them and making them ‘around the world’ with player’s names—or likenesses.”
Score with these sips, inspired by famous players and countries:
Der Kaiser Kolsch: Der Kaiser means “the emperor,” a nod to German footballer Franz Beckenbauer and his lofty nickname. You’ll find it clean and crisp, more so than most ales. Enjoy the gentle German noble hop finish. ABV: 4.5%
Rooney's Red Card: This is a new beer Justin created for the event, a style he conceived to match the fiery English footballer Wayne Rooney: Imperial English Red Ale. He made it huge and made it red ale, then balanced the caramel malt sweetness with herbal English hops. ABV: 6.5%
Golden Child: Iron Hill Chestnut Hill’s head brewer Paul Rutherford took home his first medal at a major beer competition with this beer: a gold at the 2014 World Beer Cup® Awards. It’s also an homage to Brazil’s Ronaldo— simply brilliant. Look for bright notes of lemon rind and grapefruit. ABV: 5.7%
Rising Sun: A favorite among Iron Hill patrons, its inclusion in the multi-tap is fitting as Japan is a 2014 competitor. It’s an American-style IPA brewed with 100 percent Japanese Sorachi Ace hops, giving it a spicy citrus character. ABV: 7.3%
Bedotter: This is a Belgian-style golden ale—need we say more? Belgium…World Cup…it’s a natural. You’ll catch flavors like plums, spice and bananas with a hint of balanced bitterness. ABV: 9.0%
White IPA: A medium-bodied American wheat IPA fermented with Belgian Witbier yeast. Since Belgium has been in and won countless World Cups, why not a second beer inspired by that powerhouse? ABV: 6.5%
Messi: This blend is both “messy” and made in respect to Argentina’s Lionel Messi. Justin had a great time messing around with Iron Hill Wilmington head brewer Brian Finn and Stewart’s Brewing Company head brewer Rick Hoffman to together craft summertime beer picks from all three breweries. The result is smooth and seasonal. ABV: 6.0%
Allagash Fluxus: Justin added this Allagash Brewing Company selection to the party because it’s done differently every year to commemorate the company’s anniversary. This version is a porter brewed with a blend of 2-row, coffee and chocolate malts, blood orange pulp and zest—and let’s not forget the three varieties of hops and Belgian Abbey yeast. ABV: 6.4%
Bonus: You can also enjoy a sampler of all eight beers during the Around the World Multi-Tap. And save room for the special small bites.
“Our chef was inspired by the World Cup’s location—Brazil. He’s riffing on a Brazilian steak house theme with his menu,” Justin added. “It’s churrasco-inspired small plates, which basically means lots of grilled meats. Dig in!”
Sink your teeth into:
- Bacon-wrapped tenderloin with chimichurri sauce.
- Garlic herb braised chicken thigh with pickled vegetables.
- Grilled pork sausage with port braised beans and rice.
- Churrasco-inspired trio: all of the above on one delicious plate.
It wouldn’t be an Iron Hill event without King of the Hill Rewards Club exclusives. All card-carrying members will receive a complimentary shrimp ceviche small bite. There also will be hourly raffles for World Cup prizes, a Stump the Brewer Challenge and games. Justin envisions setting up mini soccer goals to test the skills of wannabe footballers. Want in?
