This is our third win at the Philadelphia Inquirer’s blind competition of local beers known as the Brewvitational. And it’s the second win for an incarnation of our Saison. The base Saison has done pretty well for itself as well, taking a gold medal at the 2008 Great American Beer Fest. Since then I’ve been doing variations of this style including a couple of barrel-aged versions that were spiked with wild yeast or bacteria.
Two years we won third place with Saizanne Wood. Saizanne Wood peppercorn Saison brewed with my lady, Suzanne Woods of Allagash then aged in oak with the addition of Brettanomyces. Just yesterday the Inquirer announced the winners and Saison Wood, an unspiced saison aged in oak with a blend of wild yeast and bacteria took second place! It’s on tap in the restaurant now, but be sure to ask for a taste before ordering it if you’re not familiar with “wild beers”. They’re not for everyone!
