Congratulations to the Iron Hill Chestnut Hill team, who emerged victorious and brought home the coveted golden cowbell in the first round of The Monger Games, Di Bruno Bros.’ new competition that pits cheesemongers and brewers against one another in various contests to test their beer and cheese acumen.
The first in The Monger Games series, a competition for best beer fondue, took place March 22 at The Franklin, with three teams competing to win the hearts—and palates—of judges. Chestnut Hill head brewer Chris LaPierre and head chef Jared Cannon paired up with Di Bruno Bros. cheesemonger Rocco Rainone to create a cheesy concoction that, after the votes were tallied, bested entries from both Yards Brewing Company and Victory Brewing Company.
Their winning dish: a smooth blend of Piave, Raclette, Comté, New York cheddar, heavy cream, roasted red peppers, cayenne powder, salt and pepper, roasted pineapple, sautéed onions and bacon lardons, with warm tortillas for dipping. And because everything goes better with beer, of course, the fondue was paired to perfection with The Cannibal, an 8.5% Belgian Strong Pale Ale with a complex, dry sweetness, balancing bitterness and a spicy finish.
