Let’s face it—the winter of 2014 was long, cold and filled with way too much snow and ice. Now that summer has finally arrived, there is no better way to celebrate than with a fresh, cold beer here at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant. You deserve it!
Our team of brewers have been hard at work crafting new and interesting beers that will pair perfectly with our creative cuisine. Curious what will be on tap during those lazy, hazy hot days of summer? We’re dishing the new beer details below.
New Summer Beers Hitting Iron Hill Locations:
Head brewer Paul Rutherford reveals that they have just tapped Kölsch, a golden German ale over in Chestnut Hill. He considers this a perfect summer beer. Paul says, “It weighs in at 4.5% ABV, has low hop bitterness and is crisp and clean like a lager, but has a touch of melon and tartness in the finish that lets you know that it is an ale.”
He continues, “I fell in love with this style four summers ago drinking it at its source—Cologne, Germany. In Germany, it has to be brewed in the city of Cologne to be called a Kölsch, similar to a champagne or bourbon. There are 11 breweries in the city of Cologne that all brew their own version of Kölsch.”
Doug Marchakitus, head brewer at our North Wales location, recently brewed Quantum IPA, which is scheduled for release on July 8. This IPA is a session beer, perfect for drinking all summer long. Doug says, “I think hoppy beers are appropriate for any time of year, but we thought something lighter would be more quenching in the summertime heat. It’s amber in color with a toasty malt flavor, assertive bitterness, and a strong citrusy aroma. At only 4.4% ABV, it will be a great summer alternative to the big IPAs we’re becoming known for.”
Head brewer Andrew Johnston divulges, “German Hefeweizen [is] going on tap come the end of June. German Hefeweizen is a traditional, unfiltered Bavarian wheat beer. It is a light and effervescent thirst-quencher that starts off with a refreshing tanginess and finishes with a distinct yeast character of bananas and cloves. At 4.2% ABV, it is a nice, easy-drinking beer to sip out on the West Chester Iron Hill patio all summer long.”
Andrew also noted that summer favorite Mahalo, Apollo! will be released in 16-ounce pounder cans in July. He shares, “Mahalo, Apollo! is a golden, complex and refreshing summer wheat beer spiced with Grains of Paradise and Lemongrass. It’s a different spin on the traditional Belgian Witbier and tastes like summer in a glass—well, in a can, in this instance.”
Chris LaPierre, head brewer at Maple Shade, is excited for the upcoming Rauch Bock release event on June 27. He explains that the Rauch Bock, with a 7% ABV, is “a unique, dark Bavarian lager brewed with malt that has been smoked over beech wood chips for a subtle smoke character supported by bready malt flavors and aromas. The smoky character of Rauch beers makes them the perfect pairing for smoked or barbecued food. Summer is the time for cooking outdoors, so what better time for a Rauch Bock?”
Maple Shade will be featuring a special barbecue menu from June 27–29 that will pair perfectly with the smoky characteristics of the Rauch Bock.
Head brewer Justin Sproul just tapped Der Kaiser Kölsch, a delicate German golden ale, in celebration of 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. He says that this beer is “much cleaner and crisper than most ales and features a gentle, noble hop finish.” Justin continues, “It is a perfect summer beer because it is light and refreshing with a low ABV at 4.1%. It is named after the most famous German Footballer, Franz Beckenbauer, to help celebrate the World Cup. Der Kaiser translates to The Emperor.”
Make your way over to our Phoenixville location to get a taste of Amarillo IPA, scheduled for release on July 17. Head brewer Tim Stumpf is excited for this beer made with “the coveted American hop variety of Amarillo. This American-style IPA has full malt flavor, pronounced bitterness and an overwhelming citrus hop presence.”
Blobfest is one of downtown Phoenixville’s most fun weekends. We’re getting in on all the kitschy shenanigans on July 12 with the release of Cherry Blob—our award winning Belgian Tripel recipe with the addition of tart Michigan Montmorency cherries. Tim reveals that there are only two kegs of this beer, so it won’t be around very long.
